The National Diabetes Prevention Program is based on the success of the National Institutes of Health-led Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). Research has demonstrated that the risk for transitioning from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes can be reduced by 58% via a lifestyle program of healthy eating, regular physical activity and modest weight loss.
During the program you will receive lifestyle coaching along with support from others in the group with prediabetes to help you improve your health. You will track your food intake and physical activity, as well as participate in group discussions (if you want to) on how to overcome barriers to making healthy lifestyle choices for you.
During the first half of the program, the focus is on:
In the second half of the program, you will enhance the skills you’ve learned so you can maintain the changes you’ve made. These sessions will review what's working and what you want to work on. Tools such as tracking your food, physical activity, goal setting, staying motivated, and problem solving to overcome barriers.

Many insurance companies pay for the Diabetes Prevention Program and Behavioral Health Counseling services. For most, a referral from your doctor will be needed.
